So I may be way off, but I find the possible drug references fairly strong in this song. Like I said before, I'm not the kind of guy who sees drug references in every song, and I realize songs have multiple meanings, both to the song writers and listeners. :) (Or, in other words) We're going to get high on something/smoke something. It's not a good thing to do, but I'm addicted (to some extent, could be physical or mental addiction).

I go out at night looking for my next fix to ease my cravings (like a vampire). If everything sucks, escape to a different state of mind/reality/consciousness. "If you can't stand the way this place is Get away, or escape, from the crap you face in life, the people you can't stand, and forget about life for a while.

I'm going to leave this state of consciousness, I'm going to break away from society's expectations. I'm going to light up, or maybe shoot up. I'm not in a good state of mind, why don't I alter it? I'd like to take something to ease my pain. A drug interpretation does seem far too obvious for a song like this. So, I don't think this song is merely about drug use, but it could be one interpretation. And usually I just laugh when people say that a song is only about drugs, especially when the lyrics are far too ambiguous to make this claim. Now, I'll be the first to admit that there are far too many songs that people claim are ONLY about drugs. But I'd like to add another possible angle. I think this song could be about many things, including rising above the crowd, and taking charge of your life, as vane and Angel of Sin have already pointed out. Hopefully all of "Life Starts Now" will rock as hard as this single. Every time I listen to it I get a rush of energy.
